at the beginning of the day we didn't think that harry reid would get any republican votes, and he's actually secured quite a few. >> actually not a surprise. not a surprise because most republicans will say a president has the right to choose his own nominees. they believe that so that when the president is from their party, that holds true. what happened here is that hagel's performance at his hearing and some of the questions that have come up, some of the unanswered questions, have dragged that out. there are two factions of republicans who have slowed this down. a group focused solely on hagel wanting more information and that includes the new texas senator ted cruz who has been particularly critical of hagel in raising questions about his ties to foreign groups that might have provided him some salary during the years sips he left the senate. that's been very harsh questioning. on the other hand, there was a small faction of mccain, graham, and ayotte, who wanted more information about benghazi. i just spoke to them, and they said they believe that taking the stand was very effective. t

're absolutely correct. look, it starts in the senate and we'll see what harry reid can get done. most of the key players, nra ratings including the majority leader, chairman leahy, six democrats up in states that the president got 42% or less in. i don't think they'll be too enamored with him, so i think that pushes you toward things like background checks and the house, it's going to be tougher. i mean that's just the reality of it politically. so i would expect something to be done. i think there's going to be a lot of hearings but probably more in the mental health area, potentially in some of the background check areas, but anything that hints towards national regs won't make it and anything that really materially makes it more difficult for people to exercise second amendment rights won't happen. >> i tell you, i don't agree. i hope that -- i think the odds of something happening are determined by the determination of people who push those things. and when the folks are going to be joining me and jim langevin, we don't want to take the rights of owning a gun away. i own a gun myself, but i

of pressure not only directed at republicans but the number of democrats. by harry reid who i think will rather not bring up a vote on the assault weapons ban. the president was able to move the needle and say look, you're going to vote against something that's fine. but at least be on the record. tell the american people why you have a straight up-or-down vote. i do think the chances of gun control are much better. they don't have to require -- to have a vote in the senate. if they can get a straight up or down bill, assault weapon ban passage, john boehner suggested he may not approve some of the proposals to the floor unless they have majority support. assault weapons ban won't have majority ban. if people support gun control can get the up-or-down vote, they may find some success. that's where it is smart for the president last night. we all talked about the merits of gun control and what not. the process needs to allow the american people to keep members of congress on record on this issue. >> stephanie: thank you for calling me from the train bathroom to have this incredible c

override -- harry reid yesterday said the nra is just one organization among many. we listen to them but that doesn't mean we follow them. can we override the nra on these background checks? will we this time? 866-55-press. one other gun-related item that caught my attention that i find disgusting, this headline in "the new york times," got the whole article because i clipped it, it bugged me so much the most wanted gun in america. you know what happened up in newtown connecticut on december 14th, this union gunman broke into sandy hill elementary school, takes out his ar 15, mos down 20 innocent 6 graders, some of them shot 10, 11 times action with that ar 15, also mowed down and killed six innocent teachers and supervisors there at that school the police say that's the weapon he used, the ar 15. so what did we do about it? what did americans do about that? did they turn in disgust at that weapon, that semi automatic assault rifle? did they say this good shall beould be banned because nobody needs a gun like that to defend himself or her family? we did the opposite
